The dome has proven to be a very important in all styles of architecture. It has stood the test of time, originating in Rome in B.C.E. and making its way through the world into C.E. During its spread geographically, the domes style has been dramatically altered from the original form. It started as a simple addition to a building and evolved to gain an ionic stature in architecture. Some of the most recognizable domes are The Pantheon in Rome, pictured below from Rome Italy Tourist Information, the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, and St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow along with many others. The dome started as a simple circle or ellipse and now can be found in shapes resembling onions and many other styles which have had a significant impact on the evolution of architecture.

The Dome over Time
Construction of Building
For my creation, I chose to build St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia. It was founded in 1555 and was comissioned by Ivan the Terrible. It is said that Ivan blinded the architect when the structure was complete so he would never be able to make something so beautiful ever again. It is well known for its distinct style regarding the onion domes and the colors. It has eight towers surrounding one central point. I made the towers out of cardstock and then tried to copy the design onto them. The colors that are used on the Cathedral are orange, green, and white as well as blue, gold, and red on the domes. I tried to use the same colors on the actual structure and I did my best to match the domes. For the domes I used Christman tree ordiments for the large domes, and the small domes i made out of styrofoam balls and Hershey's kisses and then colored them. Because of the difficulty of making the central point or tower angular, I ended up making it rounded.

The Pantheon is the first known example of the use of the dome. It shows a dome that is low and has gradual steps up until is starts to be rounded. It also has many supports on the inside, and it not the first thing that your eye is drawn to when you look at it unlike many other structures. At some angles you are not able to see there is a dome. The Hagia Sophia is very much centered around the dome. It has the large dome in the center with partial domes on the side. Within only about 400 years of the completion of the Pantheon there was a significant change in the prominance of the dome, as well as the construction and the appearence. About 1000 years after the Hagia Sophia was constructed, St. Basil's Cathedral was founded. The Cathedral in Moscow, Russia has a very different style from the two others, that while are different at least shaire some simalarities. This Cathedral looks almost like a ginger bread house. It clearly has different influences shown by the colors that are used, the style of the domes (now onion domes), and the amount of domes that appear (nine prominante domes are pretty uncommon). I will be able to use these doucments incomparison with the others. It is very helpful to see one or the original dome to compare everything else to to see the change and progress over time.
