Greek triremes and Viking long ships were two of the most effective ships in the ancient world. These two ships dominated their respective seas (the Mediterranean for the Greeks and the northern waters of Scandinavia for the Vikings) with their shear power and naval expertise. The Greek Triremes were much larger in both size and number, but unlike the Vikings they were used primarily for naval warfare. The Vikings had no use for naval warfare because they were the only major naval force around Scandinavia, instead they used their low longs ships to sneak up of towns and villages and pillage and raid people there. As Helena Hamerrow, Professor of Archeology at Oxford, described, the Vikings are “like a mafia.”As quickly as they arrived, the Vikings would leave, leaving nothing but destruction behind.Vikings also used their ships for exploration, traveling to Iceland, Greenland, and Vinland (Newfoundland) to the west, and England, Spain, and North Africa to the south.Exploration like these led to influences in Scandinavian culture such as Christianity (History Channel).

Viking Ships vs. Greek Trieme
Viking Ship
Greek Trireme
This is not a primary source because there are not any existing Greek Trieme's around.
The Viking and Greek ships had many similarities. Both used human propulsion of oars and large sails move about the seas. The Vikings however took there ships around the world reaching places like Greenland, Newfoundland, England, and Northern Africa, while the Greeks stayed mainly in the Medditeranean. These pictures give me a good example of how these types of ships differed and how they were similar.
Research Paper Abstract
Greek triremes and Viking long ships were two of the most effective ships in the ancient world. These two ships dominated their respective seas (the Mediterranean for the Greeks and the northern waters of Scandinavia for the Vikings) with their shear power and naval expertise. The Greek Triremes were much larger in both size and number, but unlike the Vikings they were used primarily for naval warfare. The Vikings had no use for naval warfare because they were the only major naval force around Scandinavia, instead they used their low longs ships to sneak up of towns and villages and pillage and raid people there. As Helena Hamerrow, Professor of Archeology at Oxford, described, the Vikings are “like a mafia.” As quickly as they arrived, the Vikings would leave, leaving nothing but destruction behind. Vikings also used their ships for exploration, traveling to Iceland, Greenland, and Vinland (Newfoundland) to the west, and England, Spain, and North Africa to the south. Exploration like these led to influences in Scandinavian culture such as Christianity (History Channel).
