The earliest of the three, the Pantheon, was constructed in 27 BCE and has a very muted domed structure behind the front edifice. The dome it seems is more used for internal effects than external. This shows a clear begining point for the evolution of the dome.
\n
\nThe second dome in her slew of sources is at the Hagia Sophia. This dome is very pronounced as it is the central point of the complex. Constructed between 532 and 537 CE, the Hagia Sophia shows a clear change from the Pantheon, and a different cultural style, with its minarets adjoining the four corners and massive scale.
\n
\nThe third dome, St. Basil's Cathedral, is actually a collection of many domes in a very different style and with varying colors and effects on the eye. This Cathedral shows a dramatic change from either of the two privious domes. Constructed in 1555 CE, these domes definitely show a giant leap in evolution, as they adopt the "onion" style.
\n
\nThese are three very concrete and obvious examples to represent the evolution of the dome, and will serve as a good backbone and reference for Carrie's paper.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"7095813","dateCreated":"1226975134","smartDate":"Nov 17, 2008","userCreated":{"username":"alexandraganapes","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/alexandraganapes","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/classicalgala.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/7095813"},"dateDigested":1532287314,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Journal IV","description":"You have some really good research already. I would suggest that maybe you focus on specific structures so your research doesn't become too overwhelming. You have a really big topic already, but it looks like it is going in a good direction. It is cool how different cultures used the dome for various purposes. You may want to explore a little into what drew people to the dome and why they would want to use it in the first place. You might find some interesting information. Fabulous job!","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"6897079","dateCreated":"1226430433","smartDate":"Nov 11, 2008","userCreated":{"username":"carolinewight","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/carolinewight","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/classicalgala.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/6897079"},"dateDigested":1532287314,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Journal III","description":"Journal III: How will this document help me with my research?
\n
\nThese pictures that I have so far will be very helpful in determining the styles of the different time periods as well as the different civilizations. By lining up the pictures of the domes in chronological order, it helps to explain and show how the dome evolved from what it started as originally (The Pantheon) to the much more contemporary styles of the dome. The floor plans that i found will be helpful because it maps out how centered or not the dome is as well as how prominant it is in the structure. Also, the floor plans allow me to see things that I normally would not be able to just by looking at the pictures. These pictures and floor plans will help me greatly explain how the dome evolved. Also, it will be very helpful to have the original, or one of the original domes to compare all others to (The Pantheon).","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]}],"more":false},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
